Our Story
Sean and Helen started Gamesium out of a shared fascination with words, phrases, and trivia. There’s something magical about the English language – full of quirky expressions and idioms that can be nearly impossible to explain to non-English speakers. Just try explaining ‘*beat around the bush’!
Our first game, Phrasium, grew out of this fascination, along with the realisation that the origins of these phrases are often weird and wonderful. We explored over 5,000 phrases to find the most intriguing ones for Phrasium, and we learned a lot along the way.
At Gamesium, we aim to create games that are clever, fun, and packed with ‘a-ha’ moments where you discover things you never knew. We’ve also focused on making beautifully designed games (thanks to Simon!) that look just as good on your table, shelf, or in your designer handbag/manbag.
Our games are easy to learn—**no faffing around with pages and pages of instructions—and quick to play. We hope you’ll want to play them again and again. From playing lots of games ourselves, we realized that many games feel over once you’ve played a couple of times. That’s why we’ve designed multiple game modes to keep you engaged and ensure you get great value for money.
Giving back is also important to us. For every game sold, we donate £1 to Speakers Trust, a fantastic charity founded by Sue Warner that has helped more than 500,000 teenagers develop public speaking and communication skills.
We hope you enjoy our first three games, and keep an eye out for the next three, coming in 2025!
* beat around the bush – In olden days hunters hired men to beat around bushes with sticks, to flush out birds, avoiding poking the bush in case of bee nests.
** faffing around – believed to derive from an Old English word ‘faf’ meaning the movement of the arms, which evolved into a dialect word ‘faffle’ meaning to flap around or be indecisive.
